I understand how important it is to find a therapist who feels like the right fit for you and your needs. That’s why I offer a free, confidential 15–20 minute telephone consultation. This gives you the chance to share a little about what’s been difficult recently, and for me to get a sense of whether I may be able to help. It also allows us both to see if we might work well together, as finding the right therapist is a key part of making therapy effective and meaningful.
There’s absolutely no obligation to continue after the call; it’s simply a space to explore whether this feels like the right next step for you.
Your first therapy session is an opportunity for us to begin understanding what has brought you here and what you hope to gain from the process. You may be seeking support for anxiety, depression, stress, relationship difficulties, or something else entirely. Whatever your reason, this session offers a safe, supportive space to talk about your experiences.
During the session, I’ll ask some questions to help me get a clearer picture of your situation. We might talk about your personal history, lifestyle, work, and relationships, as these areas can help us understand what’s contributing to your current difficulties. Together, we will start exploring your goals for therapy and discuss how the process can be tailored to best meet your needs.
Based on the information you share and a careful clinical assessment, I’ll begin to form an initial understanding (or psychological formulation) of your difficulties and, if appropriate, suggest the most suitable treatment approach.
This first session is also a chance for you to get a feel for working with me. My approach is warm and down-to-earth, and I aim to create a space where you feel comfortable, understood, and supported. The therapeutic relationship is a key part of successful therapy, so it’s important that you feel it’s the right match.
There’s no need to prepare anything before your first appointment - just come as you are. It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous, but I’ll guide you through the process and make sure you have the opportunity to ask any questions about therapy or your treatment plan before we continue.
All treatments I offer combine both traditional and contemporary approaches to achieve the best outcomes. When deciding on the most appropriate treatment type and duration, I consider guidance from the National Institute for Health & Care Excellence (NICE) alongside individual factors specific to you.
I work in an integrative way, blending the approaches that are most suitable for your particular difficulties and goals. You can also find more information about the therapeutic approaches I offer on the website
Therapy is for anyone who wants to work with a professional to better understand themselves and make positive changes in their life. It can help during times of stress, illness, or distress, but it’s also useful for those who are generally well and want to enhance their well-being or make effective changes in their life.
During therapy, we will work together to explore what’s going on for you and find the most helpful way forward. It’s essential to find a therapist who is experienced, skilled, and works in a way that suits you. Research shows that the quality of the relationship between you and your therapist is one of the strongest predictors of successful outcomes. Therapy is most effective when there is a collaborative, confidential and trusting relationship.
For therapy to be most helpful, it’s important that you are ready and motivated to explore your thoughts and feelings, and to try out some of the reflections and suggestions we discuss between sessions.
While having someone listen with kindness and understanding can feel supportive, therapy involves more than this. Lasting, meaningful change comes from actively engaging in the process. It’s important to choose the right time for therapy and to commit to the work involved to get the most benefit.
Sometimes, the therapy I offer may not be the best fit for your needs. During our work together, we can review what might help you most and discuss whether a different type of therapy or another form of support could be more suitable.
Therapy sessions typically last 50 to 60 minutes and are usually held weekly, ideally at the same time each week.
The overall length of therapy can vary depending on your individual needs and circumstances. Throughout the course of therapy, we will regularly review your progress together and decide whether continuing therapy is helpful for you.
Yes, I offer online and in-person sessions.
The length of therapy varies for each person and depends on your individual needs, goals, and circumstances. Some people find a few sessions helpful for short-term support, while others may benefit from longer-term therapy to explore deeper issues or make lasting changes.
In early sessions, we will discuss your goals. As therapy continues, we will review your progress and decide together whether ongoing sessions are likely to be useful.
I understand that once someone has made the decision to seek support, they often want to be seen as soon as possible. I do my best to offer appointments at the earliest opportunity and will provide you with my first available session.
At busy times, particularly evenings, there may be a waiting period. If this happens, I will let you know current availability and work with you to find the soonest possible appointment that fits your schedule.
Yes! Research shows that online therapy is just as effective as face-to-face sessions. It also offers extra convenience - you can access a psychologist outside your local area, save time and money by avoiding travel or parking and attend sessions at a time that suits you, all from the comfort of your own home or office.
I offer secure online sessions via Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
If for any reason you can’t come to an appointment, then please give me as much notice as possible. There will be no charge for sessions that you need to cancel or postpone if you give me at least 24 hours’ notice. If you give less than 24 hours’ notice or miss a session without letting me know, then the full fee is payable.
All sessions are confidential. I will not share information about you with anyone without your permission. The only exception is if I believe there is a risk of harm to yourself or to others. In such a situation, I would inform you that I need to share relevant information with the appropriate people to ensure safety.
If you have been referred by another professional, I will provide them with a summary of the outcome of our assessment and, when therapy is complete, a follow-up report. Occasionally, I may provide progress reports during the course of therapy. You are welcome to request copies of these letters if you wish. Additionally, if your sessions are covered by an insurance company, the insurer may require reports as part of their processes.
